UV Sterilization – Proven Effective Disinfection Technology

UV lamps have been proven to have powerful germicidal benefits, dating back to the late 19th century when Downes & Blunt conducted the first scientific study in 1877 showing the effectiveness of UV sterilization. The history of UV germicidal irradiation for air sterilization, science and medicine will take decades to further study and understand the powerful benefits of UV light for sterilization.

Niels Finsen won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1903 for his contributions to the treatment of diseases with concentrated UV rays. In the 1930s, William Wells demonstrated the ability of UV germicidal irradiation to prevent the spread of airborne diseases.

Effectiveness of UV Sterilization

Ultraviolet radiation provides maximum bactericidal effect to inactivate microorganisms when emitted at the optimum wavelength of 253.7 nanometers (nm), known as ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). The effectiveness of bactericidal decreases when emitted at wavelengths different from the optimal wavelength. This is a reason why high-quality UV sterilization lamps are so important, to effectively deliver the right amount of UV radiation for the desired applications.

UV sterilization effectively inactivates microorganisms by damaging the cell’s DNA. DNA is responsible for cell replication, thus damaging the structure of DNA rendering cells unable to replicate and unable to spread disease. UV photons are absorbed by the cell, producing pyrimidine dimers. This causes two adjacent thymine or cytosine residues to link together, rather than through the normal double helix. The DNA molecule with the pyrimidine dimer cannot function properly, resulting in the organism’s death or inability to replicate. An organism that cannot reproduce is no longer able to transmit disease.
