What are BOD and COD?

BOD (short for Biological Oxygen Demand) is the amount of oxygen required for microorganisms to oxidize organic substances according to the reaction:

Microorganisms oxidize organic matter according to the equation:

Organic matter + O2 —> CO2 + new cells + intermediate products.

In wastewater treatment, microorganisms use oxygen to break down organic compounds. The microorganisms essentially consume organic matter, but there must be enough oxygen in the water. If there is not enough oxygen in the water, the microorganisms will die. The diffused air provides the aeration tank with an abundance of oxygen. The organic compounds in the wastewater provide the microorganisms with their food.

Because microorganisms will multiply in the wastewater over time, it is essential to have the correct balance of Oxygen, Organic Matter and Microorganisms. An imbalance will hinder wastewater treatment efforts.

COD (short for Chemical Oxygen Demand) is the amount of oxygen required to oxidize chemical compounds in water including both inorganic and organic. Thus, COD is the amount of oxygen required to oxidize all chemical substances in water, while BOD is the amount of oxygen required to partially oxidize organic compounds that are easily decomposed by microorganisms.

All oxygen used for the above reactions is obtained from dissolved oxygen in water (DO). Therefore, the high demand for chemical and biological oxygen will reduce the DO concentration of water, which is harmful to aquatic organisms and the aquatic ecosystem in general. Organic wastewater, domestic wastewater and chemical wastewater are the agents that create high BOD and COD values in the aquatic environment.

Importance of BOD and COD Wastewater Treatment

If the Bod and Cod indexes in the water are getting higher, it will cause bacteria and dirt in the water are getting more. This causes difficulties in the waste treatment process. Therefore, it is necessary to find a way to reduce these indexes in wastewater.

Ozone Technology is a wonderful solution for BOD & COD treatment. Ozone is a strong oxidizing agent and is easily soluble in water. This is a treatment technology capable of removing complex organic pollutants. Therefore, they are widely applied in water treatment, air treatment.
