The application of ozone technology has played an important role in bottled water plants since the 1970s – when the bottling industry was born. In addition to new growth opportunities, the industry also faces many challenges in production, which are sterile handling and storage due to pollution and harmful micro-organisms flourishing. This has a significant impact on water taste, odor and user health problems if the lack of disinfection stage in the bottled water production.
In 1982, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) recognized ozone as a safe and qualified disinfectant while residual ozone concentrations in bottled water can be up to 0.04 ppm. Since then, many health organizations, including WHO, have approved ozone as a key ingredient in the bottled water production industry. Ozone is safe to use as it leaves no residue or taste in bottled water according to the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) guidelines.
Bottled Water Treatment Ozone Generator
Ozone can directly participate in 2 stages in the clean, safe drinking water treatment process: the pre-treatment first stage & the disinfection final stage. Each stage has different effects, different concentration and capacity requirements of Dr. Ozone®’s industrial ozone machine.
Dr.Ozone machine participate in the pre-treatment first stage to remove impurities in water
Ozone systems can be used at pre-treatment steps to aid in iron, sulfur, manganese, color, bacteria and odor removal. Ozonation pre-treatment reduces contamination and biofilm development, reducing maintenance costs. The overall treatment system needs to be adapted to the quality of the water source. Therefore, there should be specific experiments between the effective response of Ozone with the current water quality, overall assessment before choosing the ozone machine.
Ozone integrate into the disinfection final stage
Ozone is a special chemical-free disinfectant and a powerful oxidizing agent. During the ozonation of bottled water, the ozone system is controlled to maintain specific dissolved ozone concentrations for a set interaction time, providing powerful disinfection prior to the bottling step. The reaction time to allow the desired sterilization and oxidation process is typically 0.2-0.5 ppm for 5-20 minutes. The systems quickly achieve high dissolved ozone concentrations and oxidizing capacity.
During the ozone disinfection step, a protective environment is created against bacteria, viruses, and parasites in the treated water, such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium cysts. In addition, ozone is very effective against undesirable tastes and odors.
Dr.Ozone machine is integrated into the filtration system in the final stage, accessories included 1 Ejector to mix ozone, static mixer to tear the stream to help ozone better dissolve in water, 1 pressure equalizer ensures no backflow of water into the machine- acting as a safety valve to protect the machine.
Ozone generators have a capacity larger than 150g, will come with an external oxygen concentrator and an oil-free compressor pump. In addition, the water before entering the mineral enrichment filter & UV lamp (Disinfection, decomposing O3 into O2, performing AOP advanced disinfection) can be installed with an Ozone concentration meter in the water to ensure maintenance suitable threshold.
Although ozone is a common technology for water sanitization, some plants still use chemicals such as sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) to maintain bacteria-free systems. The table below summarizes the difference between these two applicated methods.
Characteristics | Ozone | Hypochlorite (HClO–) or other chemicals |
Disinfection potency (CT, mg/L.min) | 0.05-1 | 0.1-10 |
Typical concentration during use (mg/L) | 0.1-0.3 | 0.3-0.6 |
Residues | None | Yes, requires UV destruction to remove unwanted taste |
By-products | None | May develop cancerogenic by-products unless all organic material is removed |
pH regulation | Not required | Should be regulated to 6.5-7 to maintain the highest disinfection efficiency |
Mechanical equipment | Dr.Ozone system | Dosing pump, chemical storage tank, miscellaneous logistics equipment |
Consumables | 1-2 kW | Chemical consumption, dosing pump power, acid for pH control |
