A pilot study with 6 bacterial strains was performed using different concentrations of ozone in the ozone-oxygen mixture to determine the minimum dose that would effectively eliminate bacterial growth completely. . Small gas dose of 20 mg/L ozone/oxygen mixture is applied for 5 minutes under certain atmospheric pressure. Initial tests with E.coli, S.aureus, and P.aeruginosa showed that 20 mg/L ozone for 5 minutes completely suppressed the growth of these three strains.
Ozone effect with pathogens
Bacteria are small, single-celled organisms that have primitive structures. The bacterial body is covered by a relatively solid cell membrane. Ozone interferes with bacterial cell metabolism, by inhibiting and blocking the activity of enzyme control systems. A certain amount of ozone will be enough to disrupt cell membranes, leading to the destruction of bacteria.
Viruses are small, independent particles built of crystals and macromolecules. Unlike bacteria, they only multiply within the host cell. The virus transforms the host cell’s proteins into its own proteins. Ozone kills most viruses by diffusing through the protein coat into the nucleic acid core, resulting in viral RNA damage. At higher concentrations, ozone destroys the capsid, or outer protein coat, by oxidation, thus affecting the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) or RNA (ribonucleic acid) structure of the microorganism.
Non-enveloped viruses (Adenoviridae, Picornaviridae, polio disease-causing virus, Coxsackie, Echovirus, Rhinovirus, Hepatitis A and E, and Reoviridae, etc are made up of nucleic acid cores (DNA or RNA) and a nucleic acid envelope, or capsid that made of protein. When ozone comes in contact with protein capsid, protein hydroxide to form protein hydroperoxides, the virus will have no protection against oxygenation of ozone. From that, it is completely eliminated by ozone.
