A Brief History of Ozone Applications in Wastewater Treatment Worldwide
Ozone was first discovered in 1785. By 1893, it had already been used to disinfect drinking water in the Netherlands. In Nice, France (1906), ozone was applied for water purification. Europeans later adopted ozone for swimming pool water treatment in the 1950s to eliminate harmful chlorine by-products. By the 1980s, more than 1,100 water treatment plants worldwide—mostly in Europe—were using ozone technology. Today, over 2,000 water facilities rely on ozone for sterilization.
In the United States, chlorine had long been the primary disinfectant. When scientific findings revealed hazardous chlorine by-products, ozone became the alternative to minimize the formation of halogenated organic compounds. Before World War II, several water treatment plants in New York, Pennsylvania, and Indiana tested ozone systems. By 1990, about 40 water plants in the U.S. were using ozone, including the world’s third-largest plant in Los Angeles. Approximately 40% of U.S. ozone plants use surface water sources, while the remaining 60% utilize river water, reservoirs, and groundwater.
In Vietnam, ozone technology is widely used in wastewater treatment, swimming pools, process water, aquaculture, and more. Ho Chi Minh City was the first to apply ozone generators in water treatment systems, and the technology quickly expanded to many other provinces nationwide.
Alongside many brands, Nion Vietnam has consistently supplied industrial ozone generators for water and air treatment and remains one of the leading ozone equipment manufacturers in Vietnam. Nion’s industrial ozone machines are continuously upgraded to meet the needs of businesses and national environmental standards.
Advantages of Ozone Technology in Water Treatment
Ozone dissolves well in water, allowing fast and uniform mixing. Its reaction by-products—mainly oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water—eliminate the formation of harmful trihalomethanes (THMs) in drinking water. Ozone effectively removes odors because it easily oxidizes unsaturated compounds. Its strong oxidation potential (2.07V) enables powerful disinfection and decomposition of contaminants.
Higher temperatures accelerate oxidation. In many advanced processes, ozone combined with UV (Advanced Oxidation Processes – AOPs) produces highly reactive hydroxyl radicals, which rapidly degrade organic pollutants. Although ozone may not fully oxidize some complex organic compounds, it remains the most powerful oxidizing agent available for water treatment applications.
Key Advantages Compared to Other Disinfection Methods:
-
Stronger disinfection capability than chlorine and most traditional disinfectants
-
No formation of trihalomethanes
-
Does not alter water pH
-
Enhances coagulation processes
-
Effectively removes iron and manganese
-
Rapid odor control
-
Reacts with almost all pollutants, enabling efficient removal of metals such as aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, iron, nickel, cobalt, lead, zinc, copper, and manganese
-
Fully oxidizes mercury at pH = 4
-
Converts nitrite ions into nitrate
-
Eliminates hazardous organic compounds such as acetic acid, acetone, glycerol, methyl-ethyl ketone, butoxyethanol, propylene glycol, and many others
Practical Applications of the Nion N200 Industrial Ozone Generator
Industrial ozone generators with outputs above 120 g/h are widely used in:

Wastewater Color Removal Using Nion Industrial Ozone Solutions
Nion’s industrial ozone systems can be integrated into oxidation tanks, recirculating treatment loops, and color-removal processes for:
-
Paper and textile wastewater
-
Pretreatment of domestic water and supply water
-
Aquaculture wastewater in circulating systems
-
Other water color-improvement applications
Optimal ozone concentration must be calculated based on the specific water conditions. Some types of wastewater require combined Ozone + H₂O₂ oxidation for maximum efficiency.
