3. Why is Welding Fume Extraction Necessary?

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has reclassified welding fumes from “possibly carcinogenic” to a Group 1 Carcinogen. This significant reclassification implies that welders and their colleagues face serious health risks if they are not adequately protected in the workplace.

Two Primary Hazards in Welding Fumes: Welding fumes contain two particularly dangerous elements:

  1. Fine Metal Particles: Released during the welding process, these microscopic particles are invisible to the naked eye but accumulate rapidly. Inhalation poses a major risk. These particles may contain various toxic metals such as Lead, Cadmium, Iron, Zinc, Aluminum, Nickel, Tin, and Silver, originating from the welded piece and consumables.

  2. Toxic Gases: Generated by the heating of metal combined with electrodes. Common toxic gases include Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Fluoride, Ozone, and Nitrogen oxides. Additionally, shielding gases like Carbon Dioxide and Helium are often present.

Health Consequences of Exposure: Inhaling these fumes can cause severe lung diseases and damage to the brain and nervous system. According to the IARC, long-term exposure complications include:

  • Various forms of cancer.

  • Emphysema and Asthma.

  • Kidney failure and Anemia.

  • Lead poisoning.

  • Parkinson’s-like symptoms.

  • Metal Fume Fever.

  • Chronic irritation of the nose, sinuses, and throat.

> Warning: Health damage caused by welding fumes often occurs gradually without immediate external symptoms.

The Solution: Source Capture While there are many protective measures available, the most effective method is capturing fumes at the source (Local Exhaust Ventilation). With the Dr.Air KHS-1800, welding fumes are captured immediately at the generation point before they can spread. For complete safety, workers should also use additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as respirators and face shields.
